Today marks a significant day in history – the anniversary of D-Day. This day is a poignant reminder of the immense bravery and sacrifice demonstrated by countless soldiers during World War II. As we honour their legacy, it’s essential to remember not just the collective heroism, but also the personal stories that make this day so meaningful.
A Brief History of D-Day
On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, the largest seaborne invasion in history, to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation. The operation involved the landing of over 156,000 troops on the beaches of Normandy, France. These beaches were code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The success of this operation marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe.
The planning for D-Day was meticulous and extensive. The Allies conducted a massive deception campaign, codenamed Operation Bodyguard, to mislead the Germans about the date and location of the main Allied landings. This effort included the use of dummy equipment, double agents, and fake radio transmissions to create the illusion of an impending invasion at Pas de Calais and other locations.
In the early hours of June 6, paratroopers and glider troops from the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, as well as the British 6th Airborne Division, were dropped behind enemy lines to secure key bridges and roadways. Their mission was to disrupt German communications and prevent reinforcements from reaching the beaches. At dawn, thousands of Allied troops began landing on the Normandy beaches. Despite facing fierce resistance, harsh weather, and treacherous terrain, the soldiers pushed forward with extraordinary bravery and determination. The success of the beach landings was critical, allowing the Allies to establish a foothold in France and begin the liberation of Western Europe

A Personal Connection – Remembering Leslie Ledsham (my Grandfather)
One of these brave men was my grandfather, Leslie Ledsham, service number 1535246, of the Royal Artillery 103, Heavy Anti-Aircraft division (HAA). On June 6, 1944, he landed on Gold Beach, one of the five designated beaches for the invasion. His role in the artillery was crucial in providing the necessary support to advance against enemy defences.
I never knew my grandfather as he died the year before I was born, but my mother and grandmother told me that he was a determined and strong-willed man, qualities that undoubtedly contributed to his survival and success during those harrowing times. His courage under fire and unwavering spirit exemplifies the true meaning of heroism. It is because of heroes like him that we enjoy the freedoms we have today.
Thankfully he came home.
The determination and strength that my grandfather showed, has been a motivational influence force for me in my life and business. His resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering commitment to his duty are qualities that I strive to emulate in my work.
